Being a beginner in crochet can be very exciting and if you’re anything like me, you are doing all the research you can to improve. With 8+ years in the crochet industry, I will give you the top crochet tools that I swear by.
You are going to learn about all the crochet tools for beginners from crochet materials to ball winders, organizers, and more!
After learning about all of these crochet tools you are going to be more prepared to make your next project.
1. Crochet Hooks
One of the main crochet tools for beginners is to find a comfortable crochet hook. Finding a comfortable crochet hook will ease tension in your wrist/forearm. And make it more comfortable to use your hook with grace and style.
You want to look for crochet hooks that specifically have a comfortable grip on the hook itself. It has a place to rest your thumb and the rest of your fingers.
You can also look for crochet hooks where they don’t have the grip attached, but are lightweight and do not weigh down on your hands. Having a comfortable crochet hook helps to ease tension in your hands, which assists in making sure your stitches are even and your work comes out beautiful!
My favorite brand I use personally is Tulip and Clover. If you are a beginner and just starting, I highly recommend you buy this kit Clover 3672 Amour Crochet Hook Set, 10 sizes.
This will give you the necessary crochet hooks you’ll need for the majority of your products. If you want a beautiful crochet hook without a grip, I highly recommend experimenting and trying new things.
I would recommend going to a local crafts market to find one without the grip. There are plenty of different crochet hooks that are made up of different materials. By finding that one brand/hook material (bamboo, aluminum, etc) you will be set for life and use it faithfully.
Best Places To Get Crochet Hooks (with/without grip)

- Amazon
- Joann
2. The Best of Yarns
One of the next most essential crochet tools for beginners is yarn. Yarn is essential because how else would you be able to crochet? It’s also more than that.
Finding high-quality yarn that suits your projects will substantially help you in the long run with your projects. You want to look for yarn that is most appropriate for your projects and healthy enough that it does not peel in the future.
You want yarn with high durability (strength), long-lasting color, ability to withstand certain weathers (snow, rain, etc), I have been around the block with yarn and know the best types of yarn for specific projects such as crochet hats, swimsuits, crochet clothes, and more. This crochet tool for beginners is probably the most needed tool, besides the crochet hook.
Here are some of my top recommendations for yarn
- Acrylic Yarn (Click here for my favorite brand)
- Baby Soft Yarn
- Cotton
3. A Ball Winder
This is a great crochet tool for beginners to help avoid the annoying tangles that come with certain skeins of yarn. This crochet tool for beginners is not needed to get started but can save you a ton of time down the line of crocheting.
A ball winder is a tool that when used correctly will turn any skein of yarn into a ball/cake. When crocheting, have you ever run across where the yarn was snugged and refused to pull out of the skein? Or maybe it kept getting snagged/tangled in multiple different ways? This solves that problem.
This may be a great crochet tool for beginners when you know how to work it and use it. It is not necessary to purchase if you are just starting, however, you may come across yarn skeins that will be so tangled that it can take a while to manage or fix. This purchase can save you tons of time (+ money).
Best places to find yarn ball winders:
- Amazon
- Local crafts store
- Crafts Thrift store
4. Yarn Bowl
You will most certainly LOVE the crochet yarn bowl. This is a crochet tool that will elevate your crochet experience and not only turn you into a more advanced crochet but a cleaner one as well.
This yarn bowl is designed to help keep your yarn clean, and if you get the yarn bowl winder or purchase yarn already made into a cake, then you can easily insert the yarn in the bowl and bring the string into the swirl section.
This crochet tool for beginners is perfect because it helps to keep the yarn from going everywhere you don’t want it to. When picking the right one, you want to make sure it is heavy enough to carry your yarn, so that when you pull for more yarn mileage, the bowl doesn’t move with it.
This crochet tool for beginners will be a huge asset to your collection. But beware, there are different sizes of bowls, and not all yarn skeins can fit into it. Be sure to find the right size bowl, and buy crochet yarn cakes, and this will be a perfect crochet tool for beginners.
Where to find yarn bowls:
- Amazon
- Local Crafts Stores (I bought mine online, normally local crafts stores don’t have this)
5. Organizers
Another great crochet tool for beginners is yarn organizer containers. You’re probably thinking, how is this a crochet tool? This helps to keep everything so organized and hassle-free, allowing you to be more stress-free and create more things in an organized manner. This will save you money, time, and hassle when creating projects.
Also, it keeps your space clean and prevents any yarn from getting destroyed. Plus you get a chance to decorate your house/room with crochet! Here are a few places you can purchase organizers:
- Amazon
- Joann Fabrics
- Local Crafts Store
- Any Home Decor Store
6. Crochet courses/books
Courses/books are a great crochet tool for beginners to learn. It can advance you in the crochet industry and make you stand out. There are so many patterns, stitches, and inspirations happening on social media.
Outsourcing and getting crochet books can not only give you a visual representation of what you should crochet but can inspire you to create something different. This can also help with technique, skill, and learning curves.
A crochet journal is also a great crochet tool for beginners because you can purchase it to track your projects. Although you may not own a crochet business, being able to track your projects, yarn inventory, etc is important for saving money and time.
7. Patterns
We saved one of the best for last, which is patterns … Patterns can help teach you new things as you are learning because not everyone can learn to crochet in a day. You can practice by purchasing patterns, learn new stitching techniques, and create items that you can sell/give away to someone.
This crochet tool for beginners helps advance you from beginner to intermediate and ultimately advanced. It helps you to learn new techniques and skills, and allows you to try new things! We will be adding patterns to our website shortly, but feel free to search for patterns to help you in your crochet career. There are paid patterns that you can purchase but are not necessary.
These crochet patterns usually come in the form of a downloadable PDF, crochet book, or video format. Pick the best one of your choosing, and like always, experiment and find what works best for you!
