The Pattern Instructions
Here is the written pattern on how to make the crochet bucket hat. I have simplified it with abbreviations and easy-to-read instructions for the pattern. There are three parts of the crochet bucket hat, the crown section, the sides, and the brim. The pattern will state which section you are working on, in case there are any customizations you’d like to add. Feel free to use this pattern to create your own custom crochet bucket hat.
Results may vary based on skill level, the type of yarn being used, technique, and materials used. This pattern is intended for personal use only.
Row 1: Start with a Magic Circle
Ch2, Insert 10 double crochet inside MG, close the magic circle + slip stitch into the first double-crochet.
Important note: There are several ways to start the beginning of your row, but in this project, you want to chain 2 at the start of every row. But that does not count as your first double crochet. You can place a stitch marker inside your first double crochet (not your chain 2) to know where to place your slip-knot.
Row 2: Inc in every stitch (20 stitches)
Row 3: Inc in every other stitch, starting with the first stitch underneath your chain 2 (30)
Row 4: Inc in every third stitch (40)
Row 5: Inc in every fourth (50)
Row 6: Inc in every fifth stitch (60)
Row 7: Inc in every sixth stitch (70)
To increase the size of the hat continue increasing in rows (80=medium, 90=large) It will cover the crown of your head (sizes vary)
Sides of Hat
Row 8: Ch 2 + Dc bk only
Row 9-14: Ch 2 + double crochet in every stitch
Important note: if you would like to make it longer, continue double crocheting additional rows
Brim
Row 15: Dc fl every seventh stitch
Row 16: Regdc in every stitch
Row 17: Inc every eighth stitch
Row 18: Regdc in every stitch
Row 19: Inc every ninth stitch
Important note: For the brim, if you would like to make it longer, please continue to alternate the inc/regular stitches in each row.
Finishing
After completing row 19 or the desired length, you’ll want to snip the yarn (long enough to weave) Then weave in the tail between the edged crochet stitches so that it is no longer visible.
Q&A
How long does it take to crochet a bucket hat?
Approximately it took me about 2-3 hours to complete this bucket crochet hat. Time will vary based on skill, size of hat, color coordination, and anatomy.
Am I able to customize my crochet bucket hat?
You can customize it however you like! I am going to put pink hearts on mine to make it even more pretty. You can look on YouTube to find customizable bucket crochet hats to make it your own!
Why doesn’t mine look like yours?
Based on your skill level, the type of yarn you are using, and other factors can be taken into consideration if yours don’t look exactly like shown in the picture. However, you can customize it and make the brim longer or the sides of the hat longer if you so desire.
Am I able to switch colors?
You can switch the colors to whatever you like! Remember to count your stitches to ensure you are following the pattern correctly and don’t get confused with anything.
